American adults are more likely to think fantasy works are for kids than English. But recent films such as Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter have changed the opinions of many.

No, I don't think so, but I can mostly just tell you what I like. I like fantasy, sci-fi, romance and action. Each alone, or any combination thereof, is the first thing that I look at when considering the purchase of a book or movie.
Growing up, I also tended to search out these same things in most all of my visual entertainment and now that I am an author, I still stay in these same genres.
So, no. I think adults enjoy fantasy as much as our children.

Im 26 years old and I love juvenile fiction. All I read is the fantasy and magic stuff! I have read many books in my day, adult and juvenile, but the juvenile stuff is my favorite. Some of my favorite books are the Harry Potter books, Inkheart series, Twilight series, and so on. I obviously can't speak for other adults, but I find it much more interesting than adult reading. Ive always been a kid at heart though.

It seems that, as people get older, they tend to favour non-fictional works rather than works of fiction. Could this be because we encourage children to use their imagination, but frown on adults for having flights of fancy? Who knows ...

This is a generalization, however. The Harry Potter series certainly had a following among adults ... and, of course, it was written by an adult, as fantasies generally are :)

So perhaps adults read fantasy less, and write it more!

In my experience, they more likely to shy away from it if they weren't introduced to it as children or teenagers. Also, some adults want to read "real" fiction when they get a chance to read for pleasure, and they don't think fantasy can provide that. My sister thinks fantasies are either for kids or epics, and I have to work to show her it's not.

What's your definition of "adult"? Adults write most of it. I would say that the only people who actively shy away from it are the ones who are worried about how they look to others, "professional or social climbers" and so on. Many just dismiss it out of hand. Now however, as previously stated, LOTR and HP have made it culturally acceptable to have an imagination. (Geez, guess where I stand on this!) Have a great day!

A lot do, but I know quite a few people who love fantasy works, so don't assume that adults would not enjoy it.

I would say that most people, adults included, live in a fantasy work.

I'm an adult, I love and prefer fantasy movies and books over everything else.

no....it just depends on the person and what they like to read/see...my mother is 51 and she only reads fantasy and sci-fi, I know some older people who read a mix, I know some people a bit older than me (I'm 20) who read mainly fantasy, I read a lot of fantasy, though recently my tastes have expanded and I read varied fiction and nonfiction as well, but I only write fantasy. has nothing to do with age, just what that person's mind and imagination prefers when reading.
