I just bought a new light fixture. The building I live in was built 6 years ago...so, all the wiring is modern.
My husband is going to try and connect this thing. We have instructions and I am cutting off all the electricity at the fuse box.
Is there anything else I need to be concerned about? Is this dangerous even after turning everything off at the fuse box? If you were for some reason to get the wires wrong...what would happen?
Thanks!

After you disconnect at the fuse box, plug in a small lamp at each of the outlets in the room, just to check. If all the wiring is modern, you should have nothing to worry about. We have connected ceiling fans with no electrocutions. You can do it; if you have friends or family who have done this before, you may want to invite them over, for support and advice. Good luck!

Yes it's very simple three wires three connections. Of the three it's important to insure the ground wire goes to the ground connection as has been well explained.

However, the most important thing is for the hot wire to go to the switch. If you reverse this, the socket will be live, even when the switch is off and someone may get serious shock when replacing the bulb.

I'm now used to the British system which well identifies polarity and will not attempt to advise you of the US system. I know the plugs are now polarized but you should get current information from a DIY store or on line from a trusted source.

This should be easy. Sounds like your on top of things so I would not worry to much. Follow instructions and it should be fine. Worst case a wire comes loose as you attach fixture to box. Light won't work and you have to take the light back down and reattach the wire. That doesn't happen often, but sometimes.

I always shut off at the fuse box too...I don't take any chances cause my house is older. The instructions should be right on since the fixture is new and the house is newer. I don't see any problems though, it's fairly simple once you do it. I change out my light fixtures all the time.

There will be a dark colored wire, a white wire, and a green or uninsulated wire in the box. On the fixture, there will either be brass/silver/green screw connections, dark/white/green wires, or some combination of color coded screws and wires. Green is ground - only connect it to the ground screw or ground wire. White is neutral - only connect it to the white wire or silver screw. Black (dark color) is power - only connect it to the dark colored lead or brass screw. The only other thin you may find is a white insulated wire with a black tape band on it. This is a hot lead from a switch and should be treated just like the black wire. The new fixture should connect just like the old fixture 99% of the time.

A light is one of the simplest electrical devices. Even if you reverse the polarity and ignore the ground, it'll still work.

Just follow the directions, and make sure your splices do not leave any exposed wire that could cause a short.
