It is not usually the socket or the wiring which determines the maximum wattage bulb you can use - the light socket for all wattages is basically the same - the maximum is usually set by the fitting around the light socket - is it made of plastic - use a higher wattage and the whole light fitting may melt - is it covered with a cloth material - use a higher wattage and it may catch fire - it is the fitting which sets max wattage - not the bulb socket.

Maybe you shouldn't have used the 100 watt bulb. Most lamps/light fixtures require 60 watts! If I were you, I'd check to see if there is anything on that fixture that tells what wattage to use. To answer your question, 75 is less than 100, so I am sure you can use a lower wattage.

It's not only the socket but also the wiring that is rated for a certain wattage. Try a flourescent bulb. You can get more light power at a lower wattage rating without burning the house down.

You have to change the light fixture to one that is designed for a higher wattage bulb. A larger watt bulb will actually fit into your present fixture since the bases are the same, but from a heat and current standpoint the fixture is limited.

go with florescents (100 watts of light is 14 actual watts) or the new led light bulbs available... btw the incadescent light bulb we have known for years will no longer be manufactured or available in the United States after 2010

most bulb recepticles are replaceable.if your lamp is ceramic or steel it's ok to upgrade the recepticle( not plastic).orchard supply hardware has several types of replacement sockets.three way sockets give you more versability for higher wattage. good luck.

You need to use a cfl, as stated by the other posters or change the fixture.
The wattage rating is to prevent fires.
