What?
Democracy is a form of government that allows representation by the people for the people.
Free speech is part of the bill of rights and is alot more than verbal repartee.
A review of civics class might be in order here.

No. Free speech is THE most important part of democracy. Without it you could be imprisoned for questioning your leader, for questioning doctrine. Imagine a world where you could be imprisoned, completely lawfully for saying (say) "Bush is a fool for believing in creationism" - you could have two charges laid against you; criticising a leader and therefore undermining their authority, and questioning a view which is held to be morally right; therefore meaning you were immoral. This would be truly awful, and set any democracy far down the road to being a dictatorship.
The ONLY SOLE AND SINGLE THING which should not be allowed under free speech are things which endanger other's lives. Saying "fire" in a crowded theatre, saying "blacks must die, we should kill them", publishing national secrets etc. Everything else, no matter how offensive and distasteful it is, must be allowed simply on principle.

No, it's what this country was founded on.
Oh, and I would rather have a constitutional republic over a democracy any day.
