I haven't listened to much of RUSH, but they seem to have a huge following like the other bands I mentioned. Are they supposed to be in the same category as the others as far as "trippy or hippy" rock?

I've heard Tom Saywer, but I don't find it as "far out" as Zeppelin or Floyd. What other songs should I listen to by them, that would represent their greatness?

Is it fair for me to say that the band revolves around their drummer and his skills?

I guess classifying them as "'trippy" rock was incorrect. They now seem more Sci-fi-ish...like they would be on the Heavy Metal or Flash Gordon soundtrack.

OK. Sit down....

They are Not trippy hippy rock at All.

They are a hard rock band initially Very influenced by guys like Hendrix, Cream & Led Zepp.

Afterwards, they became more a prog rock band w/ a harder edge. (my fave period)

Then a rocking 'techno" band

& now, a back-to-basics hard rock trio.

If you want a good sampling of what Rush is, just pick up any of a few "hits" anthologies out now. Easily found on Amazon.com

But if you wanna take a braver route, get "Moving Pictures" or "Permanent Waves". 2 very good starting points for the uninitiated. :)

try these Awe-Inspiring Rush Songs
Closer To The Heart
Finding My Way
Fly By Night
2112
The Spirit Of Radio
Freewill
The Trees
Thats a good representative sampling of Rush Tunes..I f I had to categorize Rush I would call them ProgMetal. Not straight Prog like Floyd or Jam-Psychedelia like The Dead.In fact Rush is considered to be one of the most Technically outstanding bands in the World. Many ppl (myself included) consider Geddy Lee and Neal Peart to be the Best Bassist and Drummer in the World today.

Listen to Fonzie that man knows what he's talkin about. He has the Album Cover for FLY BY NIGHT as his avatar

Nelly is correct also Rush puts on THE BEST Concerts I have ever attended..almost letter perfect every time for over 30 years!

Ok they are not trippy or hippie at all. They are an awsome band. If you want to get into them start with their early stuff and just go on from there. I don't know really what else to tell you i'm sure you have heard all of this already but oh well

calm down kiddo. their music isn't trippy or hippy. their music can't be categorized. they play everything from hard rock to reggae.

unlike conventional rock, rush uses irregular timing patterns, which is more difficult to play than your typical greatful dead or floyd.

anyone who knows how to play an instrument knows what level of talent rush puts into their music. that is why they are a huge legendary band.

here are a few of their all time best hits:

-spirit of the radio
-working man
-limelight
-subdivisions
-dreamline
-time stand still

They don't play acid rock. They're more of a hard rock band who's gone through a lot of phases.

2112
Something For Nothing
Xanadu
Closer To The Heart
The Trees
Spirit Of Radio
YYZ
Limelight

Led Zeppelin is the GREATEST band EVER. But if you listen to the following songs of RUSH they will show you "WHY RUSH": 2112, YYZ, Limelight, and Farewell to Kings.....
personally those are the only ones I like.
