with the address grid, you can't possibly get lost in the city.
fresh water lake, cool breezes in summer off the lake, great snow squalls in the winter because of it.

The Loop, the ORIGINAL Deep Dish Pizza, Millennium Park, Da Bears, O'Hare Airport, Daley Administration, Sears Tower, Bulls Basketball, Taste Of Chicago, Loolapalooza, Oprah Winfrey, The Mag Mile, Cubs/Sox Rivalry, Chicago Merc, Vienna Beef Hot Dog, Kanye West.....
It's the small and otherwise unoticable things that makes Chicago a one-of-a-kind :)

From the perspective of a life-long visitor who is not biased because I live there, what makes Chicago special is that it is a huge industrial City that has never lost its friendly Midwestern personality. Even the bus drivers and police are nice and helpful. It has the BEST deep dish pizza, and a beautiful, clean downtown. It has theater, great museums, and beaches, and the people are less jaded and more down to earth than New Yorkers. It also had the best department store in the world until Macy's took over Marshall Fields. :-(

Just think of Chicago as a culmination of all of those cities, you can find celebrities, we have lots of skyscrapers (and we were the first to have them, and still building) we have beaches that are filled with hot women in the summer, We have a ghetto that is 5 times larger than Detroit's (still got love for da D though), there is lots of Government in downtown Chicago, and our political scene is way hotter than DC's, and We have an array of Casinos in the area. Now to add to that we have many ethnic neighborhoods, the food here is unbeatable, this past weekend we had the Bud Billiken Parade, the largest parade of African Americans in the WORLD, and the second largest parade IN THE WORLD, we have world class museums, hotels, amusement parks, its so much to do in Chicago its CRAZY. You have to come to Chicago to understand what makes us "special". The Windy City Baby!!! Often imitated, never Duplicated!

New York= Chicago has three skyscrapers higher than new yorks highest (Sears, Aon, John hancock)
Miami=Chicago has beaches on lake Michigan
Detroit= Our southside is ghetto (especially englewood)

Every city has it's ups and downs. I think what makes Chicago so cool to me is that it is huge and diverse, and has a super high concentration of cool stuff just like New york...but being in the Midwest it is a calmer and more laid back place.
Fast enough to be exhilarating, but not so fast and crazy that you go nuts. It's like New York lite. :)
