I wondered this once. I started doing research on this, and I felt like the more I researched it, the closer I would get to the answer, but somehow I never quite found out.

Who is unknown.

When -- according to Websters Online Dictionary -- it became used in popular publications was around 1919.

It seems to be well used in many other languages too.

Webster's provides a very extensive entry on the word.
