I enjoyed everything by Barbara Kingsolver, especially The Bean Tree. Her novels are usually about women traveling through life, usually in the US southwest. Don't start with the Poisonwood Bible - it's not her best. (Don't let the b-word scare you, it's not religious)

Isabel Allende's Daughter of Fortune and its sequal are great for women on romantic adventures, but all her books are pretty much the same story with a new protaganist name.

Can't remember the author, but if you like spy/detective stories, 32 Cadillacs is great - there's a whole series about a car repo company. And Zen Moses is another good series. A friend recommended Carol Evanovitch, but I haven't read any yet.

If you like sci-fi, Frank Herbert, William Gibson, Phillip K Dick, Gordon Dickson can't be beat! I'm talking real ingenius sci-fi, not some D&D epic.

Oh, and my new sci-fi favorite - Linda Nagata. Pure genius!!

I'm not sure which genre you would prefer, but as for me, I'm into fantasy and mysteries.

Some books I would suggest:
-Harry Potter series
-Nancy Drew series
-Bartimaeus Trilogy (Amulet of Samarkand, Golem's Eye, Ptolemy's Gate)
-Old Kingdom Trilogy (Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen)
-Cornelia Funke's books (The Thief Lord, Inkheart, Dragon Rider)
-Series of Unfortunate Events (the story line for these books are good, but the language is simplistic)
-Eragon/Eldest
-Charlie Bone series
-Fahrenheit 451 (about an alternate reality where books are burned)
-Pride and Prejudice
-The Giver (about a Utopian society)
-Number the Stars
-Killing Mr. Griffin
-The Outsiders
-Frankenstein
-Ella Enchanted
-Frog Princess

They're all worth reading. Hope that helps!

From the kind of novels you describe liking I would recommend Midwives from acclaimed author, Chris Bohjalian. The novel tells the story of Sibyl Danforth, a midwife put on trial for the death of one of her clients. A trial that is supposed to be about the death of a single woman turns into a battle between science and nature as the right of a woman to choose home birth is debated. Sibyl's young daughter, fourteen-year-old Connie, watches from the sidelines, powerless to control the chaos that threatens to tear her family apart. Midwives is a novel of family, of trust, and of loyalty that will keep the reader guessing until the very last page. This is a really amazing novel of the kind you say you like. It is emotional and thought provoking but not to the point of being painfully tragic although of course it involves some tragedy.

The Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella are really good
( Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, Shopaholic Ties the Knot, Shopaholic & Sister, Shopaholic & Baby ) . Also " Something Borrowed " by Emily Giffin is pretty good, along with the sequel " Something Blue " .

The "Dune" series of science fiction books are good. They have romance, religion, politics, feudal empires, war and conflict, adventure and have been made into a movie, at least the first book called "Dune" has.
Another book within a book that's a short read but you could have an in-depth study on is "Songs of Songs" or "Songs of Solomon." Very romantic and good for a couple to study together.
Enjoy your reading and have a good life. Kind regards, Enoch.
