My mom and grandma would pull the hair at the nape of my neck and man did that hurt, it also made you do some kind of stupid dance and people looking at me thought there was something wrong with me.

Absolutely not, my mother was probably the kindest person you'd met.
On the other hand, the nun's where I went to school, St. Phillips in North Minneapolis, Mn. carried around Worden rulers up their sleeves on those big cuffs they had. When you did something wrong, you could actually hear the whistle of the ruler going through the air, probably breaking the sound barrier as it came around, where-ever they caught you, it didn't matter to them. The head was a good spot, across the hand or bare arm, made a red mark that stood out for days. Then when they'd look at you during the next few days, they'd smile, like they enjoyed every moment of it.

mom never, but i did for a bit in the car....found out a flyswatter worked (faster and lighter weight) to stop my little 'darlings' from creating a major disturbance while i was driving
