It is very rare for a situation in any media format to show a fathe that is supportive of their family and puts them first in all aspects of his life. Why is this?

Note - I said rare, not that it doesn't exist. Examples of existence : The Pursuit of Happyness, Andy Griffth Show, Men of Honor, there are more, but far more are the retard, drunk, abusive, angry fathers.

Yes, the Pursuit of Happyness was a wonderful movie partly because it was such an unusual portreyal of fatherhood. And of course the Andy Griffith Show is very old. I haven't seen Men of Honor, but perhaps I'll look for it.

It is true that fathers have been getting a raw deal in mass media lately, but I think it's because of the alarming statistics about child abuse and child abandonment, and the fathers who do not pay child support.

Back when I was a kid (OK, now I'm going to date myself), one of the most popular TV shows was called "Father Knows Best." And he always did. But when the so-called Women's Movement came along, they ridiculed that show as a classic of sexism: after all, Mother often knows best, too. The mother in that story generally deferred to the father's judgment, and that was thought to be sexist.

Notice I call it the "so-called" women's movement? It has not really been particularly beneficial to all women, but only to the subset of those who want to have careers and be aggressive and bossy. For the rest, it has been a bad thing more than a good thing. For one, due to the number of women entering the job market, it now takes two incomes to support a family in most households. Even men who make good money, such as doctors and lawyers, tend to have wives who have jobs themselves, whether or not they need it for the money. So kids are being raised by strangers, with terrible consequences.

Lots of people love to say that when Bible reading and prayer was removed from the public schools, the kids got so much less disciplined and ran wild. I say when the mother was removed from the home, that's when they went bad.

Here's my theory. I'm not saying I agree with it, it's just why I think it's allowed to happen. It's because men are not a minority. They still have the power. So a few films or shows that portray them as stupid or abusive--well, there's not much threat in that. However, if the media is used to perpetuate negative stereotypes of minorities (including women), who are already theoretically disenfranchised and marginalized, then there is a harm in that.

Another reason for this is probably the fact that statistically, men are more prone to agressive behavior than women. So, if art imitates life, it would make sense that it tends to be the males who are violent in the media.

One aspect of television I've noticed is that women can get away with some pretty ridiculous behavior and it is considered funny, whereas if a man did the same thing to her, it would be degrading to women and there would be an outcry. For instance, a woman dumping food on a man's lap or shoving him is "high comedy"--but if a man did this it would be unacceptable. I don't think this kind of behavior should be acceptable for either sex.

As a victim of abuse from my father, I tend to agree with the media that there are far to many fathers that sexually, mentally, and physically abuse there children. It is unacceptable and needs to be talked about.

Because people find the "good" boring!

They dont want 'nice' stories they only want to hear the salacious gossip and see people dishing the dirt on others!

Its the same about the 'good' youth that do 'nice' things. You NEVER hear about them either, (and yes, they DO exist!), but you only hear about the drunken, violent youths getting up to no good.

Its a sad but very true indictment of our society!
