I'm 35 weeks and will be going to my doctor weekly...i was just curious as to how they check the cervix and tell if your dialating or not. Thanks for the help

the doctor will manually (with his fingers) see if the lining is thinned or how many fingers he can get through your cervix.

It will be like a pelvic exam. The doctor whill glove up, put a little lubrication on and insert 2 fingers into your vagina. Once they reach the cervix, they will see if any part of their fingertip goes into the opening of the cervix. From there they can tell you how many centimeters you are. It can be a little uncomfortable so just relax and breathe. Good Luck!

They use there hand. How many fingers they can fit through the cervix = how dilated you are. They also feel around the edge of the cervix. The cervix is usually about 1in. thick, When it feels paper thin it is 100% effaced.

They insert two fingers (gloved) and check by measuring how many fingers wide your cervix has opened. (one finger is approx 1cm) Its sort of hard to explain without showing you but imagine holding middle and pointer finger together and flipping it over in your palm to measure how wide it is??? that makes nearly no sense even to me!!
Anyway, its with fingers and can be a little painful (more tender than excruiating) toward the end but when they do a stretch and sweep it will help you lose the plug and dilate.

OK for all the people that said that they stick their finger to see how many fingers they can stick up there are full of sh*t! The doctor will stick 2 fingers up there and he will spread them open while examining you to determine how dilated you are. and for who ever said 1 figure is equal too 1 cm is full of it! come on get real!!!
