People or humans for that matter usually have an inborn feeling of fear or discomfort concerning things that are different in form to them. This might stem from not being able to comprehend how something that is so different from them could possibly exist.
The sight of other organisms that have very large differences with respect to the human body such as having many legs, moving differently or having a different body structure (shells, wings etc) normally creates feelings of disgust or at least fear.
Fear of the unknown might also be one possible cause as to us it seems difficult to understand the way that organism thinks or feels or if it even is able to do such things and not simply operating based on instinct.

Spiders and snakes make sense, because both animals have dangerous versions, so it makes sense evolutionarily (is that a word?). Never understood the logical reason behind being scared of harmless bugs..
..Well.. some people are scared of totally random things like puppies or llamas or whatever, usually due to an experience as a child. So maybe irrational fear of harmless bugs is caused by some experience (such as scary movies featuring bugs) seen as a kid.

What the guy below me said. I guess carying diseases is a good evolutionary reason.. all answers can be solved with evolution!

Because if a catastrophic event occurred cockroaches would be the only organism to survive. It is this invincibility (and their grossness) that I believe is truly frightening to most people. They are in essence as a species invincible.

My daughter Cleo is really scared to cockroach. She screams to death when she sees one! When asked, she just doesn't understand why
