This is how I do it
12 x 36
= 36 x 12
= 36 x (10 +2)
= 36 x 10 + 36 x 2
= 360 + 36 + 36
= 396 + 36
= 432
without using a calculator

How to do it

You may be given a mixture of units, tens and/or hundreds
You have to start by putting them in order
For example 15 times 197 (and you should know that multiplication is commutative tha is:
a*b=b*a. In my example above I have a times b but here below I can write b times a to easily see and solve it

7+6 = 13 write 3 infront of 2 and save 1 somewhere
