There is logic to Chinese expansion. Diplomatic relations have been good, but as China becomes more of an economic power the politics of the situation could change.

In my opinion - YES. But let me clarify it - for me at this age and time, taking-over may not be literally conquering a country. Now a country can be taken-over ECONOMICALLY, as in economic-dependence.
There are countries who are very dependent on China's produce - from can goods, shoes, vegetables, fruits, toys, clothes, etc., even souvenirs from their various states - from coffee mugs to key chains. There are a lot of industries, who moved in to China and had transferred their technology.
With this scenario, and China's continuing prosperity, Russia and Mongolia (even other countries) will be taken-over economically. Cheaper and abundant produce from China will make manufacturers think twice where to source their goods or produce it theme-selves, or eventually close shop at this current time, or start a new business not produced in China (what else?).
Russia (and even Mongolia which is somehow linked to China in both history and proximity), with is its resources, and some difficulties or good shortages, will always be very interesting to China.

The day nukes no longer matter is the day the Russians can start to worry about the Chinese.
