Women tend to rule more from an influence that may be hidden, whereas men tend to rule in a more visible way by bringing power to bear on a particular situation.
The influence of one is not greater or or of greater importance than the other, since both are indispensable, but just different.
This is analogous to how the sexual organs of a man are exterior and have a visibility, whereas those of a female are interior and hidden.
The principle of analogy pops up everywhere.

Yes, the question is..."what is the hand?" Influence on our children from parents or figures in a home environment is still the strongest influence, positive or negative. As parents, we are responsible for shaping our children to be the best they can be. There will always be other things in this world guiding them, especially with so many distractions these days, which is why it's so important to build strong relationships with them and lead them in the right direction. It's the parent's hand that isn't rocking the cradle that allows room for other "hands" or influences to step in. In other words, rocking that cradle can be tiresome, challenging, and we can let other things in our life get in the way. The children that we are bringing up will someday be the leaders of the generations to come. I hate the thought that the "hands" have become, tv, video games, computers, movies and of course other young people who have had little direction.

This is a good question.
I was having a discussion regarding terrorism and asked how the mothers of these people would allow their children to kill other innocent people.
Then I realized that as in your statement above, it is the mothers of this world that can change it.
A child is born out of the mother's womb after being sheltered and fed by her for nine months. The total dependence of that child on it's mother is a testament to the control that the mother has.
Undeniably, in the long term mental health of that child, the father's contribution is critical, whether the father is a figure or genetic; and most delinquent children and adults have been documented as suffering from some form of deficiency in the father-child relationship.
However, in the very important stage where a child's morals and belief systems are established, it is the mother who takes a primary role, by the sheer ratio of hours spent with her child.
Historically, you can find many mothers, who against their society values or norms, secretly or overtly taught their children to act or behave differently...On the whole, I would have to say that this saying holds true most of the time. Of course there are always exceptions to the rules and anomalies do occur.

I believe it's still true. If a man is self centered you'll often find his mother's whole world revolved around him. He could do no wrong. It's sadly often true of criminals.
If she showed love and fairness with compassion for others. Often the child does too.
Men listen to their wives and mothers more than they let on and their words carry alot of weight in the choices they make.
The older I get the more I find I'm like my mother was. I had a strong rebellious streak and we were alienated from each other for years. Yet as I had kids of my own I began seeing she wasn't as crazy as I thought. My brother was the pick of the litter so to speak and so he grew up thinking he deserved the best of everything just for being. Needless to say since he wasn't part of the criminal element it caused him several times to go so deep into debt he lost everything, including a extremely good job where he was only 2 yrs. away from retirement.
Look at the mothers of all the world leaders and you can still see their influence. Look at the serial killers, same thing. A man longs for his father's approval more than love but needs his mother's love and acceptance, no matter how different they may be. Same goes for a girl except in reverse.

The hands that rock the cradle rules the earth.
Yes, I believe to the extent that my mother and my better half believe me. All famous people had had good mothers if not good parenting. Gandhi, Lincoln, Tolstoy, buddha, jesus, to mention a few.
Those who lost their mums early or those who had rough cradles were the blamed people like Hitler, mussolini, saddam. Down to the base it must work the same way.
Not just the parents? the cradle(childhood) plight and situation includes the hands.
Anyway, i want you to believe. Will you?

Bob Dylan once sang "your sons and your daughters are beyond your command" - that's more true today than when Dylan wrote those lyrics. From young people becoming terrorists to the plague of addiction and alienation the hands that rock the cradle have much less influence than previous generations.

I doubt it. This saying of course would refer to the mother being the owner of the hands doing the rocking and that is not always the case in modern day society. Nevertheless I believe the wife/mother has a strong influence in the degree of happiness and wellbeing of the familty and that in turn has a bearing on the kind of adults the children will grow into.

the "hand that rocks the cradle" is in total charge of the baby, controls their life completely, if they live or die, if they are nourished, etc, so they rule that childs world,,,
i would say, in the world today, if you give someone total control, then yes this would be true, they would rule you,
but i really dont see that happening often, not to most people

I would imagine it had it's origins in the all knowing mother. As in woman stays at home, looks after children forms bond with children and those children go on to shape the future based on that bond between mother and child. Also it would tie in with women being strong within marriages and having more influence then might have previously been recorded!
Obviously family as we now know it has so many variations we hardly know what is the 'norm' now. Undoubtedly there is more pressure on women to go out and work or have their own lives which indirectly has an effect on the bond they have with their children. Some children spend time in other homes or with other carers and undoubtedly that unique bond between mother and child becomes diluted.
So in the purest sense that expression still carries weight as people who care for children (in whatever capacity) do have a responsibility in how they shape that child's destiny. It just means lots of different things to different types of family, depending on who and how the children are cared for!
