The mayan calendar of 2012 isn't the end of the world. It indicates the end of the common era like the 0 point where we have bc and ad, eg we are now in 2008ad.
It just means that we will have events in the world so profound that we will see a new era emerge. I don't necessarily think these will be bad.

If the Mayans where so smart... How come they managed to destroy their society in such short historical time?
From the recorded history about their culture, we know they where good astronomers.. but also a blood thirsty society, plagued by superstitions that help on their demise.
So... I will put zero credibility to their predictions.

Can't think of anything specific; just thought the date was interesting - its the same year the earth's oil reserves are predicted to run dry.
