Corporal punishment is not just hitting. Corporal punishment these days is almost any disciplinary action a teacher takes. If you yell at a child, that is considered corporal punishment. If you separate a disruptive child from the rest of the class by sitting him to the side, THAT is even considered corporal punishment. If you have a child write "I will try to work on my behavior" 50 times, that is corporal punishment. It is so easy for people to say "a teacher should be friendly" but it is obvious they have never been teachers. Teachers are dealing with more than the old "class clown". We are physically and verbally assaulted every day. We are treated disrespectfully by students and their parents. We are underpaid and overworked, and yet we are still dedicated to teaching kids. I don't believe in paddling, or smacking, or physical abuse, but if I want to remove a disruptive student from the group, why is that wrong. Instead of saying teachers should be friendly, how about saying students should be respectful, obedient, cooperative and ready to learn? How about saying parents should be cooperative, supportive and ready to listen and help? I wish every person who thinks of this question would go and spend a week in a school and then rethink their answer. I almost agree 100 % with Horse, except for the "hip-hop, gangsta" bit. ALL kids act up, preppy kids, rebels, druggied, rockers, punks, grunge, skaterboarders, there are all kinds of problematic groups of kids, its not just a hip- hop, gangsta issue. Thats a bit stereotypical in my opinion. Basically, if students go to school and act respectfully and do their work, they wont have any problems from a teacher.

Opinions On Corporal Punishment

Judging from your grammar, school and education are not high priorities with you. A teacher will be friendly and helpful to students. An individual that dedicates his or her life and career to teaching young people is generally not a harsh type. The slackers in a class room are the ones that complain about a harsh teacher. They feel it is their right to disrupt a class and then when chastised for it take offense. They do not realize they are denying other students their right to learning. Teachers these days have to be harsh and on their guard because of all the coddling and political correctness forced on us. This has allowed the students to run the classroom, not the teacher.
I'm sure you will see other answers from old school people like me. A teacher would paddle your butt or crack your knuckles with a ruler if you misbehaved in school. Then when you got home and told your parents what happened, all hell broke loose. Usually on your butt.
Go to school to learn. Lose the hip hop, gangsta persecution, poor pitiful me crap. You will facilitate a more harmonious outcome.
Corporal punishment is not abuse. It is not like you are being tied to a post and whipped. Behave in class and you won't have a problem.

There are alternative punishments which could be more effective rather than corporal punishment. The meaning of corporal could mean different to different people. We need to debate on the type of discipline required at the schools/universities & decide on the form of punishment to be meted out in consultation with the parents. I think this issue should be addressed by the authorities & the parents during the Parent Teachers meetings which are suppossed to be held regularly. Clearly defining the indiscipline & punishment to be meted out, at the begining of an academic session could bring in an act of sanity & wisdom on both the parties.

Which nation are you talking about?

I don't think corporal punishment is necessary in America, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a teacher who would want to administer the punishment. The kids who "need" it probably get too much of it from home already...Or on the flip side, they're spoiled and their parents aren't doing their job parenting. They need swift and consistent punishment, but they need it more from their parents than they do the school. So I agree with you in that it's not needed in schools, but I don't think it's because teachers need to be friendly.

I will say teaching & learning is best in pleasent atmosphere so why should we use carporal Punishment?

Why shall I bring my blood pressure high for taeching others children & spoil my beauti. Harshness reflects on face of the female teacher. Teaching is the profession where most of the ladies are there.
The strictmost teacher looks most ugly due to high temper all the time.
We as a teacher sopiling lots of our feminine charistics due to being teacher. ( Like soft spoken) As there is a joke that teachers bed room talks comes out upto the intersection.

Teachers work is the work of parents elder siblings & aunts & uncles.

Teachers work is not the work of police.

Carporal punishment was baned in India during british rule.

Personnaly I feel It is good for the students that ladies are their teachers but it is bad for ladies who are teachers.
yelling , standing, using chalk to spoil the hands of their beauti, working at home too for preparing or correction.
Office Job 9 to 5 & freedom from job responsibility.

I'm not really for corporal punishment...what I am for is a type of punishment that students will fear or not want and will therefore comply with the rules and will also show respect to the adults in the schools. That may be different for each child... Hitting isn't the answer, IMHO.

The teachers should be friendly, but sometimes and for some students, the punishment is justified from students point of view.

giving corporal punishment is a punishable offence. school is a place where kids come to learn as well as play, teachers indulging in any form of physical punishment harm the kids. they are scared and lose interest in the subject.
it is not at all necessary and should be vehemently opposed

Corporal punishment is a criminal act. No teacher or administrator should ever deliberately hit a child. It perpetuates a cycle of abuse.
