don't start ripping the ivy from the wall--the could damage the brickwork. Instead carefully cut away the vine, leaving the suckers in place. Allow them to turn brown and die--this usually takes a few weeks, so be patient. But don't wait long; if the suckers begin to rot, they will harder to remove. Next dampen the wall with water and scrub with a stiff fiber brush to remove the suckers. A little household detergent added to the water can aid in removal. Rinse the wall thoroughly with water when you are through.

I have this as well. First, remove as much of the ivy as possible with shears/clippers. Make sure to wear gloves because odd things like to live it in. If you don't remove the majority of it while alive, it will be harder to do when dead.

After that, put on a ground clear spray or use the bleach to kill it. Ground clear will last about a year and will work faster than the bleach. Either way, you will have to wait to plant anything more.

Tell her to get down baby. I've done it before with a scraper, and a lot of elbow grease, but care full not to damage the brick work.
