I will say that I consider Pete Sampras to be the greatest ever for men , and Steffi Graf on the women's side.(I know that quite a few will say Roger Federer , but I cant really consider Federer because he is still active. His place in THE tennis legends has already been cemented but about whether he is the greatest of ALL time , we can only say that when he retires cause then we can put his career into perspective.)Sampras' resume has been marred by not even reaching the final at the French open , but , I guess if winning 7 Wimbledon titles and 5 US Open titles doesnt make you the all time greatest , I dont know what does!!!
And I really dont think Steffi has an equal- not only does she have 22 Slamd , she also has an Olympic Gold Medal and she is the only tennis player to win the Golden Grand Slam - the four Slams and the Olympic Medal in the same year!!!

Rod Laver, Arthur Ashe et al. can't really be considered because they played in the amateur era, played much fewer matches and played at a time when three of the slams were played on grass. Statistically you could say Pete Sampras but his style of play was incredibly monotonous and watching him was nauseaous: big serve, run to the net, volley, point over. Which is why he had his worst results at the AO and FO, the slower courts. He wasn't an all-court player, like Federer. Any other era Federer would have already won the French: Nadal = Borg on clay though and it'll be hard to weaken his monopoly of wins on that surface. Borg never won the USO or AO and for quitting the game in such a petulant fashion doesn't deserve the GOAT crown. I say:
1. Federer
2. Lendl
3. Agassi
One of the guy's above basically said that Sampras is the best and Federer can only trump that by winning the French: even though Sampras never did it. Bizarre logic but whatever.
Women's game, again it's difficult to adjudge. Graf won the most, but if Seles hadn't been assaulted, who knows what would have happened? That said, watched both of them in their prime, both were immense but I think Graf was better and more consistent. When Seles starting winning three in a year it coincided with a general slump in Graf's career; she actually held a winning record over Seles even then. Don't consider Navratty or Evert or King (ha!) as good as these two or any of the current top women. This is controversial, but:
1. Graf
2. Seles
3. S. Williams

Pete Sampras. He has 6 consecutive year-end rankings and 14 grand slams - matched by no one else. Roger Federer is probably on his way to being the best though. When you look at results, these two are two of the best. Steffi Graff is the greatest for the women hands down.

Marina Navratilova- easily. 167 singles titles and 177 double titles. She won her first tournament in 1974 and her last( mixed doubles with Bob Bryan at the U.S Open) in 2006.Who in the hell wins a major title at 49 years old? That is 32 years between her first and last tournament win. I don't think we will ever see such a force in tennis again....My second favorite is Roger Federer, he is truly amazing and I think he will tie Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slams next year. At that point I will dub him the greatest of all time by virtue of making 2 French Open finals, Sampras never made it to the finals.

John McEnroe...He won Grand Slams in both double and single...Can you imagine Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connor, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendle, Boris Becker, Peter Sampras, Roger Federer,or Rafael Nadal win in double?

No questions asked.....Simply it is Sampras.
I do not think, Federer can beat his record either in grand
slams or even in career wins. Federer has the potential,
but players like Nadal and Djokovic are sitting tall on him and
cannot see it coming....The start has already begun....But
it is still for all players to beat Federer.....he is the best as of
now. Lets see how he plays the rest of the year

For me ont he men's side it's definately Roger Federer, and for the women without a shadow of a doubt it's Steffi Graf. Both are tennis perfection personified!

andre agassi, need I explain his big contribution???????
and bjorn borg and jimmy connors also have achived uncredible results throughout their careers,so they can also be called the greatest ever.As far as the women are concerned definately Navratilova, she is a legend
P.S. Rafa is very young and promising.Despite his records for now he doesn't have as many titles as the above mentioned but I believe that in a few years there would be absolutely no doubt who is the greatest tennis player ever.
