I'm going to suggest some similar groups and singers. I would recommend going to the web site "All Music Guide"and typing in the name of each artist.s. You'll need to go through several steps to get to their songs but stay with it. Their most popular songs will be under "Highlights" Otherwise It would take pages and pages for me to tell you all of the songs available from these artists.

Seals & Crofts, Bread* , Bee Gees* , Dionne Warwick*, Debby Boone, 5th Dimension*, Fleetwood Mac *,Christopher Cross,Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester,England Dan & John Ford Cole,Dr. Hook.Petula Clark*, Captain & Tennille, Gordon Lightfoot*, John Denver*, Helen Reddy*, Carole King*, Jennifer Warnes, Linda Ronstadt*, Jackie DeShannon*, America*, Association*, Billy Joel*, Joni Mitchell*, Laura Branigan, Olivia Newton-John*, Carly Simon*, Maria Muldaur*
Firefall, Ambrosia, Little River Band* Kenny Loggins

I've put an astrick by my favorites out of the group.

I'm a serious record collector, and I'll bet a lot of my collection is pretty close to what you are interested in.

Truthfully, if you have the money to buy CDs, you'd be amazed at what Walmart has. They don't have some of the harder-to-find stuff, but they do have things like The Carpenters and Anne Murray. Those two are pretty easy to find.

I am constantly impressed with Amazon.com. I find a lot of stuff there for cheap. Half the time, something that's listed as "used" comes in the wrapper or in good enough condition for me to see my reflection in the back of it.

Beware of iTunes - a good lot of the time, their stuff is by the original artist, but it's a sucky later re-recording of the song. Those of us who have been listening to this stuff all our lives will immediately recognize a re-made tune by the original artist, but the untrained ear might be fooled.

Record collecting and interests in recorded music are so broad that I wish I could make you some kind of list, but that would be hard. I wish you luck with building your collection, though.

Hmm. If you want new songs that sound like either The Carpenters or Anne Murray, go to cdBaby.com and do a "sounds like" search.

Check out Shirley Eikhard, another East Coast singer/ songwriter who was heavily influenced by Anne Murray in the early '70's and still often sounds like her 15 albums later. (In turn, Anne has recorded several Shirley Eikhard songs...)
Samples at:

Shirley's mother, June, is an East Coast fiddling legend as well, BTW.

Also check out the jazz-influenced Manhatten Transfer through various outlets. They were one of the all-time great 4-part harmony groups, and may still be active. 2 guys, 2 gals, from New York City.
