No they don't, that's a Neocon lie. There are plenty of people dying in America from sheer poverty.

What a wonderful attitude you have locutus. You should become a CEO and make your workers compete with slave labor from other countries so you can make huge profits. After all two dollars an hour is much better pay then other places in the world. It's attitudes like yours that will get the GOP kicked out of Washington next election. You see my friend the anonymity of the internet allows some people to hide their true identities while broadcasting their true feelings. People are finally seeing just how hard core non-caring the republican party is due to discussion boards such as yahoo. You guys talk about democrats being communists and socialists while you constantly post your tyrannical thoughts of a better America. One that would willingly leave many Americans out in the cold.

You obviously don't walk the inner cities at night. Many neighborhoods are worse than war zones. You must not have any working family members that have died from lack of health care. You must not read the paper and see 6 to 13 sheriff sales of homes a week, that we have in our newspaper. You must not notice the businesses that left the country only to be replaced by large corporations paying low wages and no health care.
Politicians are liars and only want the vote to get elected and have power to go along with their wealth. La Raza is fighting to overtake the country and our politicians are in bed with the big corporations. Are we to wait until we are a third world country to wake up?
Scenic point, have you ever been to Appalachia? Have you ever walked the streets of inner cities? You would be surprised what is going on in the USA, right under your nose.
Maybe if some of the people on here didn't have their noses up in the air they could help their fellow man and worry less how to stuff their own pockets.
Lucutus, how fortunate for you that when you were down and out your health didn't fail when you didn't have health insurance.
How fortunate that you were able to find work at above minimum wage and didn't have a family to take care of.
With your attitude you should work for Halliburton or blackwater then you could profit off the war and screw your country.

"poserexposer" has the best answer so far!!!
Liberals always show some isolated hard luck cases and try to present them as the typical poor person. But, how did those people get into that position in the first place? Was it drugs? Alcohol? Unwed pregnancy? No health insurance? All these are CHOICES. Bad choices. It's like the old joke about the guy who comes back from vacation and brags about having had sex with a beautiful prostitute: "Normally, I wouldn't have unprotected sex with a $10 prostitute, but I figured, how often will I ever get to Haiti?"
I've travelled around the world and there is a huge difference between truly poor people and the "poor" in America. In Brazil, for example, you can walk into a poor person's house and literally see only the most basic and necessary furniture, like a bed, and practically nothing else. They may have gotten their toilet and rudimentary sink from a garbage dump, and patched up the holes.
In stark contrast, the "poor" in America can be seen having a $3.50 cup of coffee at Starbucks. Remember the television images of the "poor" Hurricane Katrina victims? It looked like most of those women had $50 hairdos and elaborate nail jobs, and you could see the guys in designer Fubu with gold chains. That wouldn't qualify as poor in most countries.
How many "poor" families got that way because they spent money irresponsibly? How many of these people have fancy tv's, satellite connections, DSL, mobile phones, $150 tennis shoes for their kids, etc.
One time, a study was done about previously "poor" people who in some manner got a "windfall" of cash, either through the lottery, inheritance, or lawsuit. In about 80% of the cases, the people ended up worse off because they started spending money like drunken sailors, often going bankrupt.
But the Left won't tell you this. They want to keep the "poor" beholden to them through the lure of freebie programs that keep them voting for the party of outrageous pandering.

$637 a month is better than the world's poor?
Wow. I really wish I could share in your twisted perceptions of what "poverty" is like.
Maybe you haven't looked at the cost of living these days? Or skyrocketing energy? Or out-of-control food prices?
Or the fact that so many of us are living on suppressed wages and zero healthcare?
Instead of just blaming the left and making up BS stories about what they think and say--maybe you should concentrate on why the government is more interested in bailing out the major mortage giants--like Bush Sr. did with S&L in the late 80s, early 90s--and leaving middle-class Americans out in the cold?

yes. that's a good approach for the wealthiest country in the world to have for its citizens... search out and shoot for the lowest hurdle possible.
unfortunately also most of the world's population lives at close to or less than subsistence level... which is another problem that can be solved but isn't.

Ever meet someone who lives in true third world conditions? Dirt floors, one room separated by half curtains, no air or heat, no car, perhaps, just a small t.v., no phone, roof that leaks?
Those people really know how to enjoy their lives. More importantly, they have the utmost respect for the rich and possess very strong characters. They would never ask for anything that they weren't willing to work for and oftentimes, take any effort of charity to be something of an insult. They are filled with a sense of self-pride that I have to admit, I don't even understand at times.
Our poor react so much differently to their lives, filled with self-pity, anger, hopelessness, envy and self-entitlement. Perhaps, if everyone would stop telling them that as Americans, they are inherently entitled to 'things,' they would realize the value of work and start gaining a sense of self-pride, knowing that if they don't do it for themselves, no one else is going to.

Are you poor?Don't compare anything unless you have been in a person's shoes.Your question is extremely insensitive. How about tradig places, and then you can feel how it is not to have. You probably had everything handed to you.Poor doesn't neccessaraily mean you are lazy, but who can live off of the minimum wage.

The problem with the USA's current administration is that they have made it easier for wealthy people to become more wealthy while middle class people are having more and more taken away from them.
Only the far left whines about the poor. If the middle class is not stable then the lower class cannot possibly have stability in the USA.

Because when you raise the standard of living at the lowest level, all the levels above rise as well. Opportunites for those people to lift themselves out of poverty creates wealth for all to share.
