it is an individual choice
go thru the gallery of the master's paintings
you will understand this point
to put it lightly the most unappealing color will be the one worn by a disliked person like ur competitor

I may be the minority here, but I'm personally not a fan of gold. I personally find it to be an unappealing color, but there are some cases where it looks good on some painted toy or something.

to me....purple. i do not know why but it seems cheap somehow. i really like yellow but if you gave me a million dollars to pull out a yellow outfit from my closet..i could not do it. lol just thought i would share that extra info. back to your question is it more unappealing or has a negative affect on your eyes. ?
