I have learned that bacteria could be rodlike(bacilli), spherical(coccus) or curved(vibrio, spirillum, spirochete). Can anyone explain why they are shaped like so? Is it shaped like that for a specific purpose or function? Like in the case of red blood cells, which are bi-concave disk shaped because that shape allows it to pick up and carry the maximum amount of oxygen as compared to other shapes.

i haven't read anything on this subject, but suspect it would be based on the target environment and the organisms motility needs in that environment.
