I was very serious with my career. There was no other way - - - if you do not plan and execute what you set out to do, you will never accomplish anything. No one could take his career halfheartedly.
Whether the career involves employment (meaning that you are a paid hack) or a self-paying endeavour (like if you go into a business - - - that is also a career) you must give it all of your professional time. And there is where I draw the line - - professional time is giving 100% of your effort, mind, heart, and energy while at work. And learning to disengage from work outside of working hours, except when a peculiar problem that needs immediate addressing happens.
This attitude helped propel me in the industry I have chosen. And I think I have been rewarded handsomely for the serious attitude I have adopted.

I would have to admit that I am currently still looking around. I'm not that focused, and maybe I have yet to find a job that really gives me enough motivation to stay for long. I'm relatively new to the "real world", having just celebrated my first anniversary as a graduate. And I am open to other options all the time. It's just that there seems to be so much I can do, so much I can learn, that I don't see any particular career path as "the one" quite yet.
About your story, I loved it. Seriously. Kinda reminded me of the first day I had to report for work, and I was overwhelmed by how everybody seemed to be hectic and how they all knew exactly what they were doing. I thought, "how can I compete?!", before I realized that the entire thing is a learning cycle, and that I was there coz I have a lot of potential to learn about the things they were doing. ^_^
Thanks for sharing this, Mr. Celestine. ^_^

haha It's very true...the tasks ahead could be overwhelming esp. for a newbie. That's why we go to school to get some skills and knowledge to prepare us for the great unknown or the real world as others call it.
Oh yes, I'm quite serious with my career. I want to stay focused and I shun unnecessary diversations. haha, not true, of course!!! But then again, maybe YAP is a necessary "evil." LOL

I"m never one to get serious with a career. When it gets serious, I get the burn out. I stay long in a career that I enjoy most doing and not consider as a menial job.

Before, but now no more.
Now, while everyone sees me inside my glass cubicle, typing like crazy, they think I'm working like a horse when in truth I'm just trying to answer your question. And I get paid for it!
