Pratical help is great (dont laugh) go shopping for her!! Clean the house for her, babysit the baby while she catches up on sleep. Or if you want to buy her something
Baby nappies, lotions, wipes, shampoos, creams (Buy them yourself and put them in a basket or box) most mums would love this. Then for mum buy her some pampering shower gels, soaps, flannels, e.t.c or a voucher for a haircut, manicure, massage e.t.c.

To be honest the very best present you could give is after she comes home a few days later go over and give her a hand. She is going to be tired and sore, stressed out, and could use a hand by you maybe doing a little houswork or watching the baby whils she takes a short nap. But if it is something you want to buy get her some kind of keepsake thing like a baby book, scrapbook, or one of those kits to make hand and footprints in stone.

I bought my best friend a "birth bunny" for her daughter. You can get them online at 'signaturebears' for about $25. They are white with huge floppy ears. One ear is blank with calico for you to write a special message to the baby. The other ear is also calico (underneath) and is preprinted for name, date, weight, length etc.... They come with a pink or blue ribbon in a lovely display box. This is a lovely keepsake. I would also suggest something like an anit-roll pillow for the baby to stop him/her rolling around in the cot and smothering themselves.

For mum, get her a gift certificate for a pedicure or facial and a "babysitting voucher" (you sit with baby) while she goes to have this done. Its so lovely to get some 'off' time after baby is born.
Also cook her some easy meals (nothing flash! just edible)and freeze them up. Before she comes home from hospital, organise with hubby to put them in her freezer so she has something easy and quick when she is too tired to cook. It is the ONE THING that made my life sooooo much easier and was definately one of the most appreciated gifts I could've received.

Good luck

totally agree with sexiebum, go over to her house with a lovely cooked meal (3 course is even better!!) or go and cook a meal at her house, make her do NOTHING except feed her baby, while you cook the meal, clean the dishes and hold the baby while she has a nice hot bath.
If dads at home, tell him to go to the pub and have a beer or something while youre there.
you could organise to do it regurlarily like once a month or something, if shes not breastfeeding you could always babysit while they go out togehter for a nice meal alone when the baby is older (you could make home made certificates to state that you will do this at a later date for instance)

I for one, had everything I needed for my children, I didnt need any new clothes etc for any of my babies, all I wanted was for someone to come and have a cuppa with me and hold the baby once and a while (especially with my first, as I got very depressed back then)

Food!

Stock her fridge right before she comes home. That way the new parents don't have to worry about trying to do the grocery store thing for a while. They can get into the groove with the baby first.

Often mommies are forgotten because the attention is on the baby.

You should get her a massage or a facial or manicure/pedicure or something like that.
Im sure she would really enjoy being pampered a bit!

I say practical things- cleaning, cooking, bringing food over. There is so much to do and so little time for a mommy who is healing from childbirth and sore. All I wanted to do was care for my babies.

You are a good friend for thinking of your friend.

Dani & sexieburn are completely right! That would be the perfect present ... your time and help. It would mean so much to her. And will make a huge difference.
