Even though it may be considered a fast car by others... it really isn't that fast.

And it is a really safe vehicle though on the other side. Any car is dangerous for a young driver. It doesn't matter how much hp it has... a ford focus can be driven fast too.

If you feel like she deserves it and can afford to do that for your daughter then that will definately help her not having to buy a car.

But college will be coming up too, so don't go too crazy.

Hi Kate,

It's nice to hear that you want to suprise your daughter with a brand new BMW for her 16th birthday, she must be really special to deserve it ;)

However, to be honest, if i would advise you to go with a BMW 1 Series Coupe rather than a 3 series. Why? Well, thinking that she's only 16 and probably an inexperienced driver, the 3 Series are fast cars and they could be hard to drive for her. Hence, more dangerous.

In the other hand, the BMW 1 Series Coupe is a lighter car, more economic, smaller and overall more appropriate for a 16 year old girl. They're also cheaper. Nevertheless, they're fascinating cars for city use. As far as i remember they were choosen as the Best City Cars in 2004-05 from popular car shows such as Top Gear and Fifth Gear.

They look really great and the interior is beautiful. Choose a red exterior color and there goes a perfect car for your daughter.

P.S. I would also recommend BMW's Performance Driving School. Check it out: http://www.bmwusa.com/bmwexperience/performancecenter/default

Well it really depends on what message you want to send. A BMW is a status symbol. It's a beautiful car that people buy after they have worked hard and achieved something. If you give all this stuff to your kid before they are even an adult, how are they ever going to measure their own success in life?

Even the most basic BMW 3 series has 230 horse power and is capable of going 150 MPH (although they are electronically limited to 130MPH). They go from 0-60 MPH in well under seven seconds. They are high performance vehicles, designed for mature drivers.

No matter how smart and sensible your daughter is, she is completely ill-equipped to handle this kind of performance sports car. The most likely outcome is the will end up smashing the car into something which will cost a fortune to fix.

Young drivers need to experience driving a slow sensible car, as they learn the basics. After a few years of accident free driving, maybe then they are ready to step up to a better car.

Frankly, your idea sends all the wrong messages. But if you want your spoiled little daughter to have a nice sporty car, then why not. But consider how you will feel about it if she drives too fast and wrecks it, killing herself and/or another. Or consider how you will feel when five years from now you find her in rehab like Lindsey Lohan because you spoiled her so much she no longer has anything left in life to achieve for herself.

That would be cool and all, but what about insurance rates? I wouoldnt do it just because shes new behind the wheel, theres goin to be a lot of chiped rims from curbs and a few banged doors from parking lots, and maybe even some fender benders tryin to change a cd or do lip gloss while talkin to the boys in the back seat or talkin on her cell while in traffic. I'd save the NICE ride for graduation gift, in the mean tiem get something that is reliable and good on gas like a honda cause shes not goin to have much gas money right? get a civic, they are inexpensive, fun, and easy and inexpensive to repair =) any free car is a great gidt for any 16 year old. Not to mention that a BMW is the "Ultimate Driving Experience" you "DRIVE"a BMW while others "RIDE" in thier sedan. BMW 3 series is a sports car that takes skill. Its just that a SPORTS car. camery, corolla, civic, accord, those will be fine for her skill level. Easy to control.

This depends on how RICH you are. You want to waste all that money and then have something happen due to her being an inexperienced driver then go ahead. If youre a millionare, why not? If youre not i wouldnt take the chance with such an expensive car. Either way i think its a little outrageous. But if you have the money why not. After all, its your money.

I'd like to add this, ever seen that show 'my super sweet 16'. Most of the girls on that show get something less expensive. ON THAT SHOW!. A couple got a bmw but most get less expensive cars than that and they are thrilled.

The BMW , 3 series. My dad has worked his whole life to get one, and this girl gets it on her 16th? Totally unfair... May God bless this world.
Teach your daughter the value of this : $
The dollar sign.
I work for $8.84 an hour to make my dream of a 16 year old BMW 3 come true.

no, i dont think so, i new someone who was givin a bmw, he was 17, he blew the motor out on it. then his parents spent 11,000 and put a new motor in it for him, he was going to fast on an icy road, flipped it and totaled the car. i just dont think you should spend that kind of money on someone who is still not expierenced in driving. remember, she is going to have those bad moments as a first driver such as banking into things or over things. if i was you i would wait, maybe for her 18th birthday when shes a bit more cautios driver. or even her 20th. it would be horrible to see a car such a a BMW get a ding or scratch in it. its a nice idea and yea, she might deserve is, but, let her get used to driving something that maybe doesnt go as fast. wait till shes ready. shes needs to learn the value of a dollar, or she will be living off of her parents for the rest of her life. good luck and happy b-day

Here is my.02 please have her take a "Drivers Edge" Car control course. Even go your self and learn. And you might also sign up for some advanced on track time. Road course at speed to learn the limits of handling. Over 7,000 teen's don't drive back home each year. Having friends in the car can be deadly even more so at night.

OK OK lets look at this rationally -
yo love your daughter right?
so why would you buy her a super-fast difficult to control rear wheel drive for her first car?
she will show off to her friends - don't try to defend her she WILL show off!

the car is far too fast for her

love or not, get her something a little less powerfull that has a lot of steel to protect her

inexperienced drivers have accidents - get her a car she can walk away from if she has an accident

she hits a wall in a 1 litre mini, big deal but if she powers into the wall in a bmw???
think about it!

Honestly, I don't see a single reason for her to have it.

I'm sure she's a fantastic kid, and really deserves it, but if you hand her everything in life, how is she ever going to learn to make her own choices?

I think you should level with her, and offer to split the cost of a used (and more reliable) car, like an older Accord or Camry.

Also, no 16 year old driver has the kind of experience that comes with practice. She WILL have an accident, and it's going to cost a lot more to repair the 3 series than a mass market sedan.

what kind of parent would want their novice driving child [taught to drive by a high school coach] to have a 1st. car with the capabilities of a 3 series BMW, i am afraid this will end horribly and not just for the ones currently involved.
