i was told of large check. sent a few hundred dollars to insure. check got stopped in france now need 2500.00 to get clearance from government agency there

Don't send any more money! This is a common scam/fraud, particularly if you were contacted through the internet. If you have sent money, sorry, it is already gone, don't throw good after bad. Bring the original contact details to your local police and they will let you know your options.
