Phew, (((Rae))). Touching on the harder ones, eh what?

I have never lived in a shelter. I lived in a storefront with my three cats for nine months just so I could follow my dream. I lived in my car for a bit with my three cats when my dream turned into a nightmare. I lived on couches, rented rooms, lived with filthy, disgusting people who would rather do drugs, drink and watch porn than nurture their own children. I lived in the back of a sign shop when I had no place else to go and my boss was generous and kind enough to give me shelter there.

These were all places of shelter, but not A shelter.

Not lived in one, but I had to evacuate to one during the Oakland-Berkeley hills fire of October 20, 1991, the biggest urban fire in US history. My husband and I had just bought our house when the fire happened, and we weren't home at the time, so we couldn't get back in to save my kitty or grab anything. My step son was about 7 at the time, and we were all terrified. We had to evacuate to a make shift shelter near the fire zone, and didn't find out until the next day that our house was safe, but that the fire had come within a block of the house, on three sides.

Over 2,000 homes were burned to the ground, about 25 or so people died. It was a terrifying ordeal. The people at the shelter asked me if I needed anything and I just cried and cried, "I want my house!!!" It makes me queasy to think about it.

Thank God I've never done that.

I live, safe and sound, in S.W. Ontario, where terrible ice storms, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes all go elsewhere. Thank God!

I think I got that experience, however, at church weekend retreats and "camps" sleeping with a bunch of strange men in a barracks type set up.

The thing that was missing was the fear of theft or robbery that non-Christians have in a shelter.

I also have slept in chairs, and on coaches, but always with a roof over my head.

Sometimes I'd do that at college, when I stayed too late to get a bus, without permission, upstairs in the student centre. I was rarely the only one there!

No, I have never lived in a shelter although I was homeless for a year or two in the mid 1970's, in the U.S. Southwest.
