i had this pinoy fren in a mideast country, being close with the arab co workers, he asked why they smell of sheeps. Not being insulted, an arab answered that he also wondered why pinoys smell like fish. This reminds me a saying of jose rizal "ang hindi marunong magmahal ng sariling wika, ay higit pa ang amoy sa malansang isda".Every culture therefore has its distinctive smell.
Another case, my sister, riding an elevator in hong kong overheard the local cantonese chinese there murmuring "why do filipinos smell of coconut oil"? knowing the language, she retaliated by saying, you chinese smell like corn . Well, we do use coconut oil mostly in our food, and this chinese use corn oil in their cooking. No wonder.
now, what i'm thinking is what kind of oil should one consume so they can be attractive or repulsive to the opposite sex, in whatever culture?

All nationalities and races carry a body odor that is typical of their staple or main diet. For example, Red Indians have a skin that smells of corn, Indians have a skin odor that is spicy, Arabs, Mediterraneans and Middle Easterners carry a body odor that is typically sour due to the high volumes of lemon, citrus fruits and meat that we consume. Chinese have a mild, urine-like body odor due to the large volumes of soup they consume. Not like corn oil as you mentioned. Thai people have a body odor of lemongrass and ginger- which is prominently used in their food.

The study of body odors is a major topic in forensic sciences since it can help sniffer dogs to trace a criminal and investigators to determine the possible race of a criminal.

Hence, if Filipinos have a body odor of fish, it is nothing surprising or wrong since their staple diet is fish. Mainly because the Philippines is composed of over 7000 islands and seafood is available in abundance and is affordable to all segments of the society. Fish are rich in oils and hence, when consumed, these are secreted through sweat.

Honestly, I've found the personal hygiene of Filipino people to be very high and if they do carry a body odor, it would usually be due to perspiration in the humid, tropical climate that is typical of that country.

It depends. If you're a fisherman, the smell of fish sticks on you. If you're a farmer, the scent of the sun also sticks on you. If you work in a salon, you smell nice. If in an office, the perfume and or cologne lingers on your body and definitely, you smell terrific. Different scent for different kinds of people - not just Filipinos but for all men and women all over the world.

Therefore, I cannot agree that Filipinos smell like fish or otherwise.

If they say so, then maybe yes. We are offended, naturally.

But why is it that we also say that the Indians smell the same? And isn't there a real basis for saying so?

It is because we are immune to our own smell. Now, I just don't know if I smell like fish as in fish & chips, or fish like in the wet market. Yikes!

All around the whole world. Many people many nation.
You CAN'T profile any nationals just becoz u have meet a very minority few.
YOU SEEN / MET 1, 2 or 10 ..... DOES NOT u have know all.

Each an every individual , irregardless where u from, has
their own pros and cons, strenght n weakness.

What u smell is consider "a personal body odour"
NOT NATIONAL's ODOUR

let there be peace .... we are all HUMANS .... BE HUMBLE

Well, we eat a lot of fish since our country is surrounded by many waters...We are also very mindful of our hygiene...I admit though some men in our country have Body Odor, but they're not to blame because our country is a tropical country and the weather here is usually very hot and humid...

i ve dated 3 Pinay girls and each one smelled very bad between their legs. All 3 were nice girls from good families, but they all ate too much fried food. This will kill the good smells of a woman. I recommend a vegetarian non-fried diet and you will smell beautiful!

Filipinos loves to collect colognes and perfumes. That Pinoy guys who were smelled fish was mistakenly used the fish sauce as the scent for that day.

lol!

It's possible to happen sometimes when too many perfumes lined up in different bottles and colors.

Yes, i agree.but only some of them. I am a half Filipino and i notice that most of the Filipinos discriminate their language by using more English language or words rather than their own language. Not just that, they even imitate what Americans are doing. Filipinos have no originality in most things. Just read what Jose Rizal said about people who discriminate their own language.Sometimes i am ashamed if someone noticed that knows that i am half Filipino because of these things.

Exalted One,

Are you sure this guy in the elevator did not mention me by name? Because the scene you just portrayed exactly happened to me. I used to live on the 6th floor of a classy building in Palestine Road, just before the bridge, in Jeddah. The refined Saudi guy visibly stepped away from me in the elevator, as if revolted by our closeness.
But because of the sharpness of the perfumes they had on, I couldn't smell anything else.

We are what we eat, I read somewhere.

The Brits were termed "Limeys" by other nations because they were fond of eating lime (the sailor boys, to prevent scurvy).

The Germans, they called Krauts because of the sausages.

The French, they called Frogs... well, let me not speculate.

But Filipinos do not smell bad, in general, especially those they now call metro men, because of the salons now open for men.

As for Filipinas, if only I could drown myself in their scent.

Yours,
Till sun flowers.
