So say you had sex on Monday and she ovulated on Friday, no sperm = No baby?

and 5-7 days seems kinda long. I've always heard 3-5.

Would that Fertile fluid be around about...10-12 days before the time of ovulation?

Okay here's the deal.

The vagina is normally not a sperm-friendly environment. Vaginal conditions are designed to keep out bacteria, and for all intents and purposes, sperm is seen as an invader. Because of this, sperm actually only lives for matter of hours under these conditions (most sperm die off within a few hours, some may last a bit longer).

HOWEVER....when a woman is entering her fertile phase, the conditions in her vagina change. She begins to produce FERTILE cervical fluid (or mucous). This particular cervical mucous is very sperm friendly, creating an environment that allows sperm to thrive. Not only does fertile cm allow sperm to live longer, but it helps it to swim better. With fertile cervical mucous, sperm can now live anywhere from 3-5 days in the female reproductive tract.

The long and short of it is...how long sperm lives depends on where the female is at in her cycle. But sperm never lives 7 days or more under any conditions.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

72 hours for sperm. 24 hours for the egg. When they say 3 to 5 days, they mean if you had sex on say, a Monday, the woman ovulated on Wednesday, there would still be spern alive up inside of her waiting for that fertile egg to come out.

Outside the body sperm can live for up to 3 hours in ideal conditions (Contrary to what a lot of people seem to believe, being exposed to air doesn't kill sperm...if it did they would not be able to harvest sperm at sperm banks). Inside the female's body they can live 3-5 days.

Wouldn't it be cool if sperm had a mind of its own, sort of look after the guy, is he really ready to be a father? If not the sperm would take the scenic route to the ovum and then in honor to his creator, fall on his sword, while saying maybe next time.
