Most operating systems use a memory cache to store data before eventually writing the data to the hard drive. When you shut down the system from the OS (the way you should), this cache is written to the drive. This is why it sometimes takes longer to shut down.

If you just shut off power to the computer, everything in the cache is lost and you will eventually lose data, including some critical system files and the system might not reboot.

Computers will last longer anyway if you leave them on 24/7, assuming your cooling is up to par. When was the last time you saw a light bulb just burn out when it was on? You usually won't, it will burn out when it's turned on :)

like he said, and the reason is windows XP needs to put away all your programs and to make sure that you've saved all your important files. Then it turns off your computer and sometimes even the newer monitors.
If you continue to turn off with the switch one of these days you will find that your files will be corrupt and it will be from this.
I personally don't turn my monitor or printer or speakers off unless going to be gone for extended time, but pc does get a rest when i do finally go to bed.

yes it can hurt. however if you choose to press always the power button to turn off your pc you misght as well do these following steps first, so that once you press the power button your system will automatically undergo shutdown process. (no need to click start
click on start>control panel>click on 'performance and maintenance' or 'power options' then click on 'power options' again, then click on 'advanced' tab, you will see there below the power buttons - 'when i press the power button on my computer' click on the dropdown menu and change it to - '"shutdown". click on apply. then ok..

so everytime you press the power button it will shutdown your computer right away ...

yes, why else would there be the turn off function... (i.e start- turn off)

i would strongly recommend turning it off like that ONLY when you're not supposed to be on your pc and your mum or dad are on coming your way ... ;)

If you do it all the time it will eventually mess it up. Just doing it every now and then won't.
