It depends on what antivirus your using. If your using norton, or mcaffee the answer is yes. If you want good protection without the lag, try AVG 7.5 free. its free and its the best antivirus iv ever used.

It will make it slower because of background processes, and system services it uses to scan your computer in real-time. You can use msconfig (if you have windows) to configure your system *not* to use these services and processes which will render your software useless temporarily. I do this with Norton so I can keep my computer running smoothly, then I just turn it back on when I want to scan. You have to be sure you know which processes and services it's using, though, so you may need to check. Most of the time when people use msconfig they find other things running in the background that are unnecessary. You should be careful using it though: start->run->msconfig...again be careful as this can screw up your system if you disable the wrong thing then you need to know how to fix it. I recommend *not* doing this unless having real-time performance on your computer is of the essence. Speed for speed sake is not a good reason to reduce the security of your system.

It really depends on the ammount of memory you have.
To check,
-Right Click My Computer
-Properties
on the bottom it has like 1GB, 256 MB, 562 MP (making this up as i go)
Then check the Minimum requrements of the anti-virus. If the minimum requirement of memory is the same value (or greater) then yes you will have a slower performance.

Antivirus Software is also an application which will use some amount of memory on your Hard Disk. Gradully it slows your speed, but not that much, because that saves your from Virus tooo. but when Antivirus Software is running your computer will be very slow,

Usually it consumes a portion of the computer's resources. If it isn't performing real-time protection then the resources are only consumed while scanning is going on but the protection is quite limited without a real-time component.

Depends on the program, stay away from all in one suites like Norton or McAfee. Stand alone products work really well. I have one antivirus, three antispyware, and my Windows firewall turned on, this setup work really well. By the way all my programs are free you can get them here http://www.basicspywaretips.com/

If it runs in the background yes, but you can turn it off. Which makes the program somewhat useless in scanning viruses that may start up during computer use.

it depends on antivirus.
norton makes slower, mcafee also makes slower but avg, kaspersky and nod32 are good antivirus which have least effect on system performance.
bye.
