I was told that it is impossible to grow flowers underneath pecan trees. Is this true? Also, what would be ideal to plant there. Thanks to all.

Pecan trees require a lot of water. You can plant flowers under them if you plant shade loving flowers such as hostas and keep them watered. It is usually better to plant the the flowers in a raised bed or in containers. Whoever told you this might be confusing pecans with walnuts which produce growth inhibiting toxins. http://www.pecanworld.com/

We have some Queen Anne Lily of the Nile planted under a pecan tree in our yard that are doing very well. There is a lovely, clover-like ground cover growing there as well that seems to quite like it there as long as there's plenty of water.

Some things will do okay...Most plants won't grow there. You could try some violets. There are some natives...you need to look for what is native in hickory forests. Not my area.
