I prefer paperbacks just because they are easier to hold, but they seem to wear out really fast. I buy hardbacks when I can now because I got tired of replacing worn out paperbacks. Plus, hardcovers do look nicer on the shelf.

As suggested, most people prefer paperback because they are cheaper (and, for some, portability is an issue).
For me, someone who reads books more than once, hardcovers are definitely preferable. I don't really care how they look. I'm far more interested in how well they hold up over time. Perhaps that's a viewpoint that only comes with age, but paperbacks, even when well cared for, seem to deteriorate more quickly than hardcovers. They yellow, pages fall out, the covers become soft and tear, and the pages get dog-eared.
Given the choice, and the funds, I always prefer hardcovers, and I will generally only purchase paperbacks if hardcover editions are unavailable.
Still haven't bought any Harry Potters - I'm waiting for a *really* complete set.

It doesnt matter as long as it's a good book. However I think it depends on how thick the book is. If it's not very thick,I'd choose paperback. But if the book is more than 500 pages, then hardcover will be the best choice because the book wouldn be easily torn

When I was still a college student, I definately prefered paperbacks because I could just toss them in my backpack, they were light and small, and then I would have my book available whenever I needed a few minutes of relaxation. Also, because they are less expensive than hardbacks, I didn't get as upset if the cover got torn in my back, or otherwise damaged.
Now that I do most of my reading in my house (usually in bed before I turn off the light), I don't really have a preference. I will usually limit my hardback purchases to my favorite authors, simply for economic reasons, but if one of my favorites has a new book out in hardback, I'll buy and read it happily.

I prefer paperback books. Hardcover books are kinda expensive and they're so heavy to carry.

I think people like the portability of paperback and the price is cheaper, but at times the book is so urgently desired that the hard cover is the only choice.

Hardback. I like the traditional sense of a book out of a library. Paperback because it gives you more leverage but it also gets ruined pretty easily.

My first reading is always in paperback. Its just easier to handle and port about. But if decide to buy the book, I buy the hardback.

I prefer hardcovers. I have a genuine honest-to-goodness library with brick walls and a fireplace and leather furniture - the whole bit. And hardcovers look so great on my shelves. Pax - C

Hardbooks first--collector items in my book. :0)
Paperbacks later for personal reading enjoyment.
