I have a 25' tree that is getting to big. I want to cut 10'-15' out of the top I don't want to kill it, but at the same time I need to reduce the size.
Thanks James

No you won't kill it. Remember that conifers do not regrow from old wood, so make sure you do not cut the tree at an angle, or you will see the bare stems until the outer foilage grows over and it will look unsightly.

Cutting the top off will disfigure the tree for a time, but you can also 'splint' a side branch to create a new top. Of course, you'll be cutting THAT new top off when it reaches over 25', too. What is the need of reducing the size?

"If I cut the top out of a Conifer tree will I kill it?"

Yes, you will kill the top bit.

You won't kill the bottom bit though... it's still rooted.

Make sure that the wound is sealed properly to avoid any contamination while it regrows and possibly 'shape' the top to stop it having a 'flat' look.

As long as there are live branches it should be okay. May look weird. You may find it will go into shock and drop alot of needles. It might look dead for a while. Bu if you continue to care for it you will probably get good new growth.

Think about how it will look when you'r done. Might be ugly.
