Im a 21 year old college student, Im a Film & Television and Political Science major and I've recently been bitten by the theater bug. I just wanted to know if Im way too old to try to do theater. Im also a sucker for musicals, would voice, singing, and/ or dancing lessons be useless on account of my age. And if not, where do I start? Please give me feedback, Im completely serious about this. Thanks.

You're not too old for theatre until you're dead! I'd say to start with auditioning/volunteering to help back stage on student plays when you get back to school (I'm serious about the back stage work. The best actors I've worked with have all done technical work- if you know how the lights work and how to focus them, it's easier to say *in* the light when you're on stage). And if you want to, singing/dancing/acting lessons can't hurt- as long as they're with a reputable teacher. Check out your school's course listing and see if they have any beginning singing/dancing/acting classes you could take. And look for community theatre groups you could get involved in during school breaks- they tend to do a lot fo musicals (because they draw audiences) and they're not hard to get involved with (even if all you get to do at first is bit parts or be a stage hand). Good luck, and most importantly, have fun with it!

You can't be too old for theater - there are parts that need everyone from 0-100+

For musicals; acting, singing, diction, and dance will be essential.

I'd start with a couple community theater auditions and see what happens. You'll get the best feedback about how to proceed from the folks that run these theaters and shows.

Church choir is a good place to get regular singing practice and there's always the little old church lady who teaches voice on the side who would probably be willing to help you some.

If it's calling you, go give it a try. Life is short! Break a leg.

Absolutely not! 21 is young. As for where to turn, your university is a good starting point. Take a theatre course and volunteer for a student production. If the school has a music dept, check the bulletin boards and ask around for vocal coaches.

When you have time, look into local community theatre groups. You will find your niche as you acquire some contacts and experience. Good luck.

You're really never too old to start in the theater. You could start at a local theater organization for adults. However, be careful that you're feelings aren't damaged if you audition and are not picked for the specific part you want. It's a dog-eat-dog world, and you will need to stand up to it. If you are really into it, however, you will succeed. Break a leg!

I would think that if you already have some natural talent (singing/dancing) that voice/dance lessons would be a wonderful idea. Then 21 wouldn't be too old for someone who was serious about getting into theater.

If you cannot sing on key and have two left feet, you're probably beyond hope at 21.
