Children have a natural curiosity. Once they grasp asking this question will get answers from you then they will keep it up until you go crazy lol. I have 5 children and I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that asking why can be a sign of autism, ADHD or any other issue. A child has a lot to learn and is naturally impatient to learn it. There is nothing abnormal or odd about the question "why".

If you have ever watched Mad t.v., they had a Skit entitled TERMINATOR MEETS JESUS. The URL to this video clip is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nOEI8LZrNE. The terminator, [Arnold Schwarzenegger] goes back in time and tries to save Jesus from being crucified...at one point in the clip, the terminator shoots 3 Roman soldiers who are advancing towards Jesus and Jesus pushes the terminator's gun up so he can't shoot anymore, then Jesus says ''don't kill'' and the terminator says ''why?''...Jesus says "because it is a sin''...the terminator says ''why''...Jesus says, ''it is one of God's commandments''...the terminator again says ''why''...Jesus says ''because it's not nice'' and again the terminator says ''why''...it is a very funny skit to watch. The point I'm trying to make is it's not just babies when they reach a certain age that are fond of the question ''why'', but grown adults as well, and I don't know WHY!

This is so great! Why are there so many adult questions: Why am I here? Why do you believe in...Why am I lonely? & so on. Not to mention the "What" questions.
I so very much agree with AllGrownUp. WHY do people label the natural curioisty of children? Some humouorous answers here, but I especially got a wonderful laugh from operacats. Got right to the grit of it.
I enjoy your questions, (& I'm not being a sycophant!)

It may be that the child has found a key to the world around him/her. "The first object of the understanding", "that which the intellect conceives when it conceives of anything".

Used as an Adverb why may mean: "For what reason".
Why did you do that?

Used as a Conjunction why may mean: "The reason that".
I don’t know why he did that.

Used as a Noun why may mean: "The reason".
A good article will cover the who, the what, the when, the where, the why and the how.

It's about the age that they become aware of the relationship between cause and effect. They begin to wonder what the causes of things are. "The sky is blue, I wonder what causes that." "If adults start as babies, then where to the babies come from?"

I also like Guru's answer. Sometimes they do it just to keep you talking, because they like talking with you.

They do it for a couple of reasons to find out why things happen or are the way that they are, to get your attention and to make themselves be important. By the time that children learn to ask why they also notice that we pay attention to things that we feel are important. IF they keep asking questions they get our attention and there for are important. Children that age want to be the center of our lives especially if they have a younger brother or sister. It redirects our attention back to them.

Fear of rejection. The question why always leads the respondent to continuing a conversation with the other party.

Fear of silence. A long list of whys is better for a child who fears being alone.

Anxiety. Quiet moments can be terribly upsetting for children and adults alike.

Toddlers are inquisitive - that is their nature. Humans learn most up to their fifth year, thereafter all knowledge is merely expansion of what had already been imprinted in the first 5 years. That is why the phrase most used by toddlers, is "Why?"

There a lot of reasons for this but basically they just want to know why does things happen around them. Its just a way to know things....even when you get older u still ask why but not like oh why is the sky blue. Adults just rephrase it differently and its perfectly normal.
