I have many favourites for shade--gooseneck loosestrife (Lysimachia clethroides), mayapples (Podophyllum), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia), Trout lilies (Erythronium), Solomon's seal (Polygonatum multiflorum), Barrenwort (Epimedium), sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum), bleeding heart (Dicentra), Bloodroot (Sanguinaria), deadnettle (Lamium) sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata), Ferns of all kinds, but never been big on Hosta although they are very popular for shade.....

I agree, Hostas are wonderful shade plants. However Bleeding Hearts and Lily of the Valley are also some of my favorites. Try Ferns for an exotic but equally beautiful approach!

Hellebours. It is a beautiful shrub that flowers in the winter. Here are pics of the flowers and you will see why I love them.

Bleeding Heart, lily of the valley. Also impatience. (I think that's an annual, maybe it's the patience plant, anyway it's pretty.)
