No idea how to copyright it, but it's never too early to copyright something, in case somebody steals it.

Poor Mans Copyright : write out the lyrics and place them in an envelope. Mail them to yourself through REGISTERED MAIL. The date stamp by the post office acts as legal and government registered time stamp. No lawyers or copyright fees required. That said at the point where you are ready to record and release material get it done properly first.

As long as you never open the envelope the seal is valid with the time stamp.

the lyrics are "poetry" whether set to music or not. copyright is automatic as soon as you put them in fixed form, ie write it down. music also requires a fixed form, and if you cant read music tabulature, have someone help you get the music written out. this will give you copyright protection. registration is not required unless you need to take a legal infringement action.
