Actually, there aren't any expansions out for Guild Wars right now.

No, seriously, there are three Guild Wars GAMES. Each of which is a standalone game.

They are, in order of release:
Guild Wars: Prophesies (or just Guild Wars)
Guild Wars: Factions
Guild Wars: Nightfall

You only need to own one of the above to play Guild Wars, it doesn't matter which. Each comes with its own PVE story line, and each has exclusive content. Each starts you at level 1 and takes you up to the universal cap of level 20. (In Guild Wars, the skills you equip are MUCH more important than your character level, hence the low level cap.)

If you have more than one of the games special content is unlocked depending on which combination of games you own. Your characters can also travel between the games. This allows them to learn the exclusive skills from each game, and earn some of the exclusive items.

Fortunately there is NO monthly fee in Guild Wars, and never will be.

Remember, though; DO NOT BUY A USED COPY!!!!!! A used copy of Guild Wars means the account key was used. Since the account key is used, you won't be able to get your own account and won't be able to play.

Unfortunately at the moment you have to buy each game separately. Also there is a true expansion pack, Eyes of the North, coming out soon that requires you to own at least one other GW game.

As for which Guild Wars to buy...I recommend starting with Nightfall. It is the fastest game to get you to your level cap and has heroes, customizable minions that make filling out your party and soloing a lot easier.

Guild Wars expansions usually add new quests, new skills, etc. You should check the information for each one on the official website and places like wikipedia.

In GW level 20 is the highest level you can reach, but you can get more and more skills as you progress. If you want to get really high levels you should try playing World of Warcraft, Lineage II, Ragnarok Online, etc. Another thing is that when you are out fighting there will be no other players around unless you are in a group or in a town/city.

The really unique thing about Guild Wars is the fact that it doesn't have a monthly fee. You buy the game (and expansions if you want) and that's it. Most of the others have a monthly fee.
