A public college is funded by the state government, while a private college is funded primarily by tuition and donations. This means that the private school is more expensive, because tuition is not subsidized by the government. Public schools are often larger and more crowded; at their worst, it may be hard to get into the classes you need because they can't afford to hire enough faculty. There is sometimes less of a need to please the students, because there is a sense that you get what you pay for, so you can't expect too much (that isn't true of all public schools, but particularly at those which are not the state's flagship schools, it is common). Private schools are often smaller and tend to pride themselves on their low student/faculty rations, so that you get to know the professors. Unless the school is in financial trouble, there are often very updated facilities, like the dorms might be newer and there would be more impressive fitness centers, along with things like labs and studios for academic areas. Within each type of school, there is a range of quality. The very best schools (Harvard, Stanford, MIT, etc., are pretty much all private, but there are some pretty terrible private schools too. With public schools, the best, places like UC Berkeley, are competitive with the vast majority of schools, but the worst can also be pretty bad. There are public colleges out there that, if they were private and not government-subsidized, would be out of business.

Private can be more expensive, but it can be the same as going to an out of state public school, so if you're going out of state to go to college anyway, the price tag isn't much different. Private usually has smaller class sizes, and is a smaller school, student-wise. Public schools are funded by the state, private schools get some money from the state govt, but most of it comes from private parties like Alumni, who donate. That's why it's more expensive, they pay for the college by tuition as well. Private colleges can also be religiously based, and strict ones can have alot of rules, but not all private colleges are like this.
And for the person who posted below me, I don't know of any college that has uniforms.

A public college is run by a government -- national, state or local. A private college is run as a private business, and doesn't receive direct financial support from a government.
Usually, public colleges offer lower tuition for people who are citizens of the city, state or country where the college is because they (or their parents) are taxpayers, and help support the school.
This is US usage. In Britain, "public schools" are actually private, I understand, although for reasons I don't understand...

Employers would take this into attention, besides as whether you had adventure and have been given in contact (case in point, in case you wanted to alter right into a chemist, did you become in contact in study courses?). you will in all probability have extra threat in inner maximum faculties. besides, sorry for the long answer, i wish any of it helped

private colleges usually have better interactions between students and professors, usually because of smaller classes. Private colleges are also more expensive, but generally considered providers of better education.
