Each computer will have network properties associated with their respective "LAN card". To access these properties:
Start-->Settings-->Control Panel
Double Click Network
Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties
In the list choose "TCP/IP ..." and click Properties
You need to specify an IP address.
On one computer use 192.168.1.10 on the other use 192.168.1.11
Click Ok
Both computers should now be able to communicate.

If you have a cross-over ethernet cable, all you have to do is enable networking. In XP there is a wizard to do that. Obviously you have a peer-to-peer network.
