I just did a connection speed test on speedtest.net. My computer's results came back with about 4000 kb/s download through a wireless adapter, but my dad's which is directly hooked up to the router came back at about 17000 kb/s. Is there any reason why my speed is so much slower and what can I do to get it closer to his?

I am currently using a Linksys router. If it is a router/wireless adapter problem, please post suggestions to what hardware would be best to purchase.

Wireless is always slower than a wired connection on the same network. The reason is there are more data collisions that occur when the data is transmitted wirelessly than when it is sent on a dedicated wire. The more wireless clients there are in the area, the worse the performance.

If using PC and unable to move, u might want to consider moving your computer to a wall closest to the router. Every time that signal goes through a wall it degrades the signal....

Is the firmware for the router updated and the driver for your adapter is also updated? Was your dad's computer using the net when you did the speed test? To get a true test everything must be the same.

Wireless and Wired connection all have the same speed.
It just depend on the NIC card. The wireless Router could be a 802.11g/a/n, your dad have a 802.11g/n NIC and you could have a 802.11b. It just depend on your NIC
