you might get that much on it,some of them will get above 12,some have been known to average around 15 total, that isn't bad for a 454 though, good luck on it.

The newer 454's that came out ??? (can't recall exact year) have the newer heads (Vortec) and this has made a huge difference on the miles per gallon and torque/horsepower.
Many old timers recall the day when towing with big block they could not run the speed limit (70MPH) without the temp gauge running too hot so they would set the cruise at 60 MPH or less. When GM slapped the newer heads on the 454's they can run hoighway speeds towing a house and not run hot.

I think you can do 15 MPG if you stick to the speed limit and try running some 10W30 pure synthetic oil as this will give you an extra 5 HP and help you squeeze every MPG you can out of a gallon of gas.

Don't forget to service the tranny and the differential amd U-joints. Nothing like fresh oil/fluids all through the drivetrain. Makes things smooth, quiet, and fast.

Good Luck!

Hey, I am a woman and you are being sexist. My first vehicle was a solid black 78 Monte Carlo with a 454, sunroof, tilt wheel, swivel seats and console. I loved that car. It would FLY!!!! I think I got around 15 mpg best I can remember. Don't think we can't enjoy a rod just like the next "guy".

So what's your question? I think your mileage may vary, and you probably will be lucky to see 10 MPG running without the trailer. That's why I bought the Duramax diesel in my GMC 3500 dualie 4x4. I'm getting 16 MPG without a trailer, and 12 MPG towing a 38' fifth-wheel.

Yeah the figures are right but the ratio of the gears is either cruising or pulling--so lower will use more gas--higher will cruise at low RPM. Hey just treat it good and drive it nice. Sludge will be a problem--get the engine flushed and new gaskets--worth the cost.
