This is an older style door, with a spring on each side of the door. Thanks

Open! Be VERY carefull! The spring must not be extended while you are installing it! When the garage door spring is fully extended it has enough power in it to easily kill you if it were to come loose! Sounds like you have no idea what you are doing here. I would have a pro do it for you. This really can be VERY dangerious.

Each side as in along the tracks or as in at the top of the door?

If they are along the tracks, change them when the door is UP

If they are on the wall at the top of the door opening, you have a torsion spring which can break your arm if it is not removed properly. Do a search on "Garage torsion springs" and you will find several good explanations on how to do it.

Takew the old springs to your local hardware and they can give you the correct replacement.

With the spring relaxed - ALWAYS.

Up will have less tension. Be careful though, it may still want to snap back.
