i watch the show for while and it got me going. i just wonder.
it seems like an ancient, but in other hand, its like a modern world. i see they use radio transmitter, they have TV, VCR, Electric poll. but i never see guns or vehicles in the anime.
also, theres a funny part. in the lastest anime, kakashi uses headphone to communicate with Guy. but when the sand village requests emergency help, they send a bird to konoha. LOL! why not just use radio transmitter.

Despite its similarity with feudal Japan, modern items are seen throughout the series, such as movie theaters, security cameras and even modern life-support systems. Computers are also present, as are video game consoles. In spite of the clearly modern age items present, military technology does not seem to be on the same level. Most military technology seems to be medieval in nature, large-scale crossbows being an example; however, the use of the various supernatural items, such as exploding paper tags, allows them to simulate more advanced technology like flak cannons. The level of communication technology seems to be inconsistent as there have been times were both radios and carrier animals have been used.

well to answer the first question, Kishimoto said it was set in the modern-day time, he just prefers the older weapons over guns...as for the bird to send the message, they have a range they have to be in to use radio transmitters, that is y kakashi keeps sayin that if they go much further they wont be able to communicate with Gai anymore...plus birds are cooler =)
