not sure if you can afford one, but he English Mastiff is the best for protection and for children....they mink the children all the time...very tolerant and patient with children....will almost always be with the child, even do the mischief, you child can climb on them, pull them, sleep on them, and instinctively the mastiff will stand between the child and anything considered harmful to the child...our dog even protected our neighbors child...they come with manners, and are very intelligent and get that they are large...they are gentle with babies and puppies...they will even crawl on their bellies when approaching an infant...and NO one will approach your house, car or child...they are better that attach dogs because they do not prefer to attack...they love peace...yet there is no way any harm will ever come to your child...they even just naturally sleep in the childrens room...I had a foster child who was afraid of the dark...our dog got this about him and slept right by his bed...

I believe any breed of dog can be protective. I have a mutt that is very friendly, but will protect me if the need arised. Now what dogs I would put with a 5 year old are few & far between. If your child does not have dog experience, get an alarm system (cheaper anyway) & wait a few years then get a dog. I do rescue & most dogs I think would be protective, I would NEVER put with a 5 yr old. Children can be unpredictable & dog don't usually like that unless they are so so laid back & that isn't much protection.

If raised from a puppy and raised properly with love and correct training.... Dalmation, (considered a friendly firemans dog...very protective), a Rottwieller, German Shephard, an English Bull Mastiff, Black Lab.... and the list could go on and on...these are just ones that I have experienced with kids that are awesome pets and really take to thier kids and become protective not only of thier territory but thier kids.
Don't forget the first part, any dog as protective instincts but must be raised with love, and correct training.
Good luck in your dog search.

well, I am getting a Great Dane and I have heard that they are gentle giants until someone or something threatens their family. The breeder told us that they sold a male to their friends and the friends had a neighbor who had a pitbull (following this? ok!) And the pitbull came over while the child was on her swing set and the Great Dane grabbed the pit and tossed it around a bit. Pit lived but had to see a vet asap. Good enough for me!

My experience with a male Golden was that he was so hyper that he would step all over my 7 month old son. It was so horrible that I got rid of him. I also have an American Bulldog that lets my now 10 month old climb on and 3 year old ride. She is completely sweet. I do not recommend a Golden or Lab and definitely not a Jack Russel. Too hyper.

Australian Cattle Dogs. They're small enough that they're not as likely to hurt the child, but also big enough that the child shouldn't be able to hurt them. They're also herding dogs, so they're livestock guardians. Your child will become its little flock of one and protect the child and probably help you keep up with your child as well.

Other Herding class dogs are also good, because they're natural protectors and usually pretty gentle. Corgi's can be nippy though. So I'd pick from there based upon any other specifications.

I grew up with a German Shepherd and an Australian Shepherd as my babysitters when I'd play outside.

Almost any breed will protect if it has a bond with the child. I would sujest a golden, loving sweet dogs that fit in any house hold. Labs are OK but they seem to knock children down alot. Whatever you decide , make sure you have the time to train it to behave and be a good dog.

I would have to say a Lab. Or retriver. I have had great luck with them and I have 2 kids. One is 4 and a newborn. They love kids and protect. I have 5 labs if that helps and 3 of those are pups they are good too. Hope that helps.

i had an american bulldog once. And she was the sweetest dog i ever owned but was very protective over me, just when she needed to be. And i got tons of lil cousins and she let them ride on her and pull her cheeks and ears. Anyways i think there really good dogs.

i would recommend a larger breed dog. Like a Lab or Retriever. Larger dogs seem to have more tolerance for children than smaller dogs do.
