I don't really see a difference between Cuba and China. Why do we allow ourselves to do business with such horrible countries. Also why are the Olympics there? Seems odd, why not a EU country?

Because Republicans don't view China as an economic threat.
They view China as a market to sell American products to.
On the flip side, they view China as a place to buy products dirt cheap to sell to Americans at a nice profit.

Cuba would barely make a dent economically for us. What did they do for us when they were free 60 or so years ago? It was a nice vacation place, maybe. Who knows, maybe once Castro is gone that will change.

China on the other hand is huge for us. They have changed their policy ever so slowly to allow a somewhat free economy. Not perfect by any means. We are not the only country doing business there. The EU for one is also doing business there. What better way is there to get a country who has crushed the spirit of it's people, to create a better lifestyle for it's people. I'm guessing the hope is they would integrate into the global economy and not feel threatened by the free world. Allowing the people of China to compete for work and goods and services is the best way to do this. But it has to be hard for a Communist leader to watch this. So, like Russia, time will tell.

We have little say in who gets the Olympics.

No--at least not directly. China is a big country--and although the lavor is cheap, the skill level is high enough to produce fairly sophisticated products. So there's a big money incentive.

But--there's money to be made by trade with Cuba--quite a lot in fact. However, there is a highly vocal and well organized lobby on the right wing--fueled by the old guard of the Cuban-American community--that is the "swing vote" in Florilda--a key Red State. And a virtually religious belief that "when Castro dies" the Cuban government will suddenly fall apart.

Thepoint--the political influence of this right-wing block is key for a lot of the neoconservative politicians. And--though there's plenty of people who would like to make money off trade with Cuba--that political leverage trumps the economic incentive.

With China, there's actually a similar pattern--or would be if China were small, like Cuba. But China's size means the potential profit is a lot greater--enough so that it is the deciding factor.

That's actually a good question. As it is China makes a lot of cheap things, and we do business with them, just as we did with Japan after the war, so people could get cheap items.
We had an embargo with China, but that ended in the '60's shortly before Nixon when over to China, if you remember his walk on the Great Wall, in 1971. After that the embargo was lifted and we began trade negotiation. There was a resultion between China and Taiwan, not one that Taiwan liked, but China ended up in the UN and we began trading with then.
As far as things with Cuba go, Castro has never made any overtures to make things better, he has not wanted to make any changes that would make it possible for trade, so all Cuban goods are illegal over here, and it is illegal to travel directly to Cuba. We all know that people are going and coming from Cuba and that men are smoking Cuban cigars, but it just isn't talked about. It's a wait and see game now as Castro is getting old. It's anyone's guess as to what will happen when he dies.
As far as your comment about the Olympics, the location of the Olympic site is decided by the Olympic Committee, which is made up of people from countries all over the world. China has as much right to hold the olympics as any other country, they are part of the Olympic community and they were chosen for the next Olympics, I don't understand why you feel it should be a European country?

China has improved over the past few years to be not nearly as much of a pain in the tail as it was; instead of communist, it is now fascist. Cuba hasn't. As for why the Olympics are being held there, China probably offered the best deal to the IOC.

Firstly the olympics are in China because the IOC is not controlled by the USA.
I see your point about both countries being communist but you spoiled your objectivity but referring to them as horrible countries.
As an American you are living in a time where the world wide economy is becoming fairer and less favourable toward America. The almighty US dollar not longer reigns supreme and China will overtake the US economy in 5 years so I guess you just get used to it.

You have a lot of growing up to do.

Cuba and China are poles apart.

You do business with China because your corporations are interested in making more profits.

The Olympic movement is NOT an American invention; it is international.

You also need a better education.

confident. Beg, borrow, or scouse borrow a replica of the Wal Mart action picture: "The extreme value of low cost" (you will no longer discover it in Wal Mart, regardless of the indisputable fact that). China, for the duration of the regulations of Wal Mart and different 'low cost' retailers, has exchange into the worldwide's production unit. between the justifications you're paying $4 or extra for a gallon of gasoline is with the help of company regulations of producing products the place ever the backside hard artwork is. and of direction stupid 'commerce regulations' that purely ensure that purely Wal Mart and the chinese language government benefit. Ross Perot mentioned it years in the past whilst he ran for president..."pay attention that loud sucking sound? it somewhat is jobs leaving united statesa."... Our very own government has looked any other way (and it is no longer Bush's fault, yet a coverage that is going back a pair of a protracted time) collectively as production business company after business company has closed up save and moved operations distant places.... it is unhappy, yet confident, we've carried out it to ourselves. it is superb that the Mexican goverment, through corruption and apathy, enable this financial growth bypass them! rather of China and a communist government and militia making the most of this, it could have been Mexico, and then Mexicans and different needed and South American workers does no longer could come back here finding for artwork, yet have jobs south of the border. rather, the Mexican government prefers to maintain itself in ability via snuggling as much as drug cartels and don't something for the voters of Mexico, collectively as nonetheless blaming the U. S. for all of Mexico's issues.
