Aside from the transmission cooler ( I know it doesnt increase the capacity, just breathes more life into my trans ) what can I do to increase my towing capabilities?

probably have to put an extra leaf spring in the rear---a bigger ball on the hitch--tires that are high heat rated--redo the brakes--pulling is one thing--stopping is another. How much more do you want to tow?? You probably can get a few hundred pounds extra--but that means an empty tow vehicle--some people carry hundreds of pound of junk--and forget that it all adds up when the truck weight is totalled up. Check with the dealer and see if it is possible with these added features. It is not a good choice to tow with--the van itself has only 2 motors to choose from and they are not good for much more than moving the van itself. The handling is not good either--a towed trailer will be a nightmare. sell the van while you can get some money for it--buy a better tow vehicle rated to tow what you want from the start. The freestar is the old windstar--a failure as it was--so they renamed it the freestar--another unpopular van that is on the way out.

A shorter rear gear will help the tow capacity, but will also hurt mileage and my mess up the computer (turning too many rpms for a given speed). I'm not sure if OBDII applies to trucks - you may want to check this. You should also add an additional transmission cooler - heat kills transmissions. The tongue weight may not change much, so stronger springs are probably not necessary, unless you're already sagging.

you can't, doing anything to increase the towing capacity of your vehicle puts extra wear and tear on the engine and drive train, and extra weigh on the trailer toungu the best thing u can on. Best thing to do, leave it alone. Besides, if you bought your freestar new, it is still under their 3 year, 36,000 mile warranty. If you exceed the rated capacity of your Freestar, It may void the warranty.

Not much. Not sure if you can put helpers on that vehicle or not.
