For the past year, I have felt very depressed. Low self-confidence, not wanting to get out of bed, losing interest in things I used to love, losing relationships with friends, constant sadness/anger, irritability, etc. I have tried to clue my mom in that I am depressed, even tried kidding around, but I don't know how to flat out say it. I would like to visit a doctor and possibly be treated, but I am too embarrassed.

I'd like to note that 3 people in my immediate family (out of 5) have been diagnosed with depression.
I am 15.

I think you should tell her soon. When I was 14 I became depressed and I was too scared to tell my mom or anyone close to me. Then somehow I became a Manic Depressive, which was way worse. During my manic phases I would be up for days at a time, I would cut my self, and I was anxious. Then my mood would drop and I would just sleep. It only got worse. I didn't get help until I was 18. It took a long time to get better. I am 21 now and I am barely stable. So please try to talk to your mom. Even if you have to flat out say, " Mom, i seriously think I need to go to the doctor, I think I am depressed." Once you tell her she will do everything in her power to help you. I know once my mom found out she did.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 15 year old that doesn't feel depressed much of the time. Especially girls. Goes with the territory.

Yeah, I know it's fashionable these days to call everything a disease or a syndrome but it's not. Yes, if you go to a shrink you'll be turned into a victim and you'll certainly be medicated. You probably know lots of kids that are on stuff like Ritalin. Modern psychological practice considers life to be a disease process that must be drugged. This trend is out of control, it's destructive and it's insane. They'll help you to your knees if you want to crawl. I hope you don't fall into that trap.

I'm 16. I've been through a little bit of depression before. I may have some good tips for you on how to feel better and how to also tell your mom about it. Feel free to email me if you want. I check it several times a day.

Hope to hear from you.

Just tell her so you can get some help. I tried to tell my parents that something was wrong with me and they never believed me. It took me until I got married and myhusband could see that there was a problem ( I have Generalized anxiety disorder) I finally got to see a dr and have been treated and i see a psychatrist and it really helps. I feel so much better. Don't feel bad for needing help there is noting wrong with it. NO matter what dumb old Tom Crusie says ;)

Dont be embarrassed, I know how it feels. Its terrible. You need to go on a long vacation. You just have to go on and tell her. ''i feel depressed.'' ''i need a therapist'' ''i dont feel happy, i feel down all the time mom whats wrong with me etc.''
MAke it sound as if you're not sure. go on from there. You should get help, I know its hard but you should. Dont be afraid. Gdoo luck and i hope u feel better. i have a therapist and it helps me sometimes.

See a doctor. There are a myrid of things that can cause depression. You are not alone. My son struggled for years but was persistant: His was caused by thyroid problems.
We later learned that several in the family had thyroid problems.

Talk to your mom at appropriate time, during bed time when everyone is more relax. break this to her slowly and tell her that you want to get well.

Do some exercise, try to befriend new people, smile, do some volunteer works. u will change your view of life.
Pray and god bless u..

hey. It's hard, and embarrasing, and painfull, I know... parents don't see what they don't want to. Give up on the hints and just sit down and tell her straight out. It's dangerous for you to continue like this without some help. And remember that it's your mom, she'll love you no matter what.

This is one of many self tests for depression online.

How about printing it out, taking the test, then showing the test results to your mother. If the test shows depression, especially given your family history, your Mother should be able to talk about this.

If you STILL can't get anywhere with her, talk to the oldest, sanest of your depressed relatives. Se if he/she can help get you into to see somebody about this.
